Paper size: 5 ¼ x 7 ½ in.
Provenance: With F.A.C. Prestel, Frankfurt, before 1908 (L.2730)

This drawing depicting a Thornback ray is part of a longstanding tradition of natural history drawing in the Netherlands. Given the country’s strong maritime tradition and reliance on the sea, Dutch artists have created fish depictions since the early 17th century.

The Thornback ray is typically found in Atlantic coastal waters off the coast of Europe and western Africa. It can also be found in South Africa, the southwestern Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Seas. The species is believed to be native to the waters as far south as Namibia and South Africa.
