The Album d'Authal, by Adrien de Montigny, Originally from the Collection of Charles de Croÿ Cartouche: "Le Villaige de Gorges. 1597" 1597 Medium: Watercolors on vellum Dimensions: approximately 20 ½" x 15 ¼" inches This idyllic view of Gorges shows the small village at center, nestled in the rolling landscape. A small stone church is visible at the center of Gorges, distinguished form the surrounding houses only by its color (and therefore building materials). There is no sing of a château. At the time, the signorial land in Gorges consisted only of a house with a barn, arable land and woods. In the foreground, two shepherds, one with a wooden leg, proceed down a road between two hills, while their flock grazes near the edge of the village. |
