William Howard Yorke was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1847, the son of noted marine artist William Gay Yorke, who taught him to paint. Yorke showed significant talent, and by the age of 18 he was already a ship portraitist, working out of Liverpool, England. His style is similar to his father’s, though softer, and he eventually grew to greater acclaim and higher levels of patronage. Yorke’s work is represented in a number of important collections of marine art, including the National Maritime Museum, the Manx Museum, the Mystic Seaport Museum, the Peabody Museum of Salem, and maritime museums in San Francisco and Liverpool. The reasons for his success are readily evident in this splendid, large-scale painting of the clipper ship Raphael in choppy seas. Carleton, Norwood and Co. launched the Raphael at Rockport, Maine, on October 28, 1875.
