| Travels in the Interior of North America | |||
| In 1833, Prince Alexander Maximilian of Wied and 23-year-old Swiss artist Karl Bodmer embarked on a journey up the Missouri River which resulted in the most visually in depth study of the Plains Indians ever produced; costume, weaponry, war paint, utensils, teepees, pipes, and blankets are illustrated in meticulous detail. 'Travels in the Interior of North America' was based on the Prince's journals and 81 hand-colored aquatints from Bodmer's watercolors and sketches. In contrast to other artist-explorers of the 19th century, Bodmer was well trained in the classic European tradition, and the work he did in America is considered to be the high point of a distinguished career. | |||
